I thought it was from humping the Teles, anyhow, there's this metal band called "Haylar", and punk band called "Kaizen Mofos" that have guitar solos with tapping in them. Sadly, that's all I know of the Chur to the Chur metal scene.

Brilliance. Sheer brilliance.
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

From what I've heard, the NZ metal scene seems to be dominated by bands with "extreme" vocals and no sense of melody, so I haven't heard anything that catches my interest.

Yeah, same. Screaming and growling and cookie monster is an instant gig-ender for me.

One notable exception - Sonic Altar

They're like Iron Maiden Jr and the singer is fantastic.

Yeah tbh - I think it's a pretty rubbish scene. Cookie Monsters everywhere. And some of the bands that have shown promise turn out to have pretty bad performances, or awful singers, or be douchebags etc...

I reckon our 'alternative/hard rock' scene is awesome though.

I swear, if they weren't based in NZ they'd be huge right now.

I've always thought of national and local to be pretty much the same thing in NZ in terms of music, but maybe things feel a bit different in Christchurch because entering or leaving the South Island costs a band a bit of money so it doesn't happen as much as it should. I've always had a great time playing down there, wish I could do it more.

Can't really tell you much about metal, but there are a few cool hardcore bands in NZ if that's your thing. Can't say I've heard any alternative/hard rock that I've liked from NZ in a long time. Care to make some recommendations Pake?

Well, there's always Former Skeptic!

Also This Theory of Static are pretty good, and Crash Test for Favourite Things have some sweet songs. I suppose I more mean that it's good in terms of me not desperate to leave venues because of how bad the bands are. Some of the bands I like to stay and check out, or I don't mind seeing. Which is much more than can be said for most metal or 'indie' gigs I've seen.

Definitely have seen my fair share of terrible alt bands tho.
