So... whats everyones favourite? I've only just discovered Jason Becker's Perpetual Burn and I'm blown away by Altitudes, but I still rate Passion & Warfare as my most favourite ever, COOL STORY BRO!!
How can I be sure I'm here?

Re: Best Instrumental Guitar Album
Leo Kottke's "6 & 12 String Guitar" would be my favourite.
Michael Hedges' "Aerial Boundaries" comes second.
Ry Cooder's "Paris, Texas" has a vocal track so it doesn't count, I guess.

Re: Best Instrumental Guitar Album
gotta be this. Have checked out a lot of other Satch/Vai/[insert widdly guitarist] and nothing even comes close in terms of great catchy melodies and guitar playing. Vai does some cool inventive shit, but Joe's playing is memorable and instantly recognisable on this album. Some Bozo wrote:Still "Surfing With The Alien".

Re: Best Instrumental Guitar Album
I still consider Rising force and Trilogy to be right up there even though they have a couple of vocal tracks on them. I quite like several of Satch's albums, Not Of This Earth has some neat bits, as does his 'Red Album'. Was never a fan of Steve's recordings, even though he is a great player. For blues it was the Roy Buchanan record that had the crazy ass verion of hey Joe on it. Dave Gilmore did some interesting solo work with plenty of guitar instrumentals, and Batio is just plain outlandish and I have a listen every now and then for the novelty factor, he is amazing. There are also plenty of good instrumentals on regular albums, like Ides Of March, Stranger World and Orion etc which have stood the test of time.
edit, Just listened to Stranger World, woops, it has vocals, took this many years to notice them. haha.

Re: Best Instrumental Guitar Album
If Eric Johson released an album with just his intrumental tracks on it, then that would be my fave!
As the situation stands, I'll go for PASSION AND WARFARE too...

Re: Best Instrumental Guitar Album
I'd be tempted to go with Surfing With The Alien or Rising Force (or should it be called Odyssey)
But I'm actually going to go with

Jose Neto's debut solo album called simply Neto.
