Roots and/or alt country- eddikat me

Post by bender »

I need something new to listen to and I'm leaving towards roots and country tinged stuff at the moment but I'm struggling to find anything that excites me. I like the idea and sound of rockabilly and alt country (really anything rootsy tbh) but so much of it seems derivative. Where should I start looking?

Lucinda Williams. Wilco. Cherry ghost. Uncle Tupelo.

Also I have a sweetheart of a record by Lucinda Williams guitarist Val Mccallum. Really nice.

Also Greg V's record is pretty great.

Cheers man- will check those out. Any recommendations for something rockier/bluesier/funkier that doesn't sound like a collection of cliches?

I thought the Wilco / billy bragg collaboration "mermaid avenue" was a gentle ease into trad and country.
And some great guests and playing all round.

For stuff that's not derivative, you have to go back a ways.

Alt Country pretty much starts with the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album by the Byrds.

An album called "The Gilded Palace of Sin" by The Flying Burrito Brothers (Gram Parson's next band) goes on from there.

I also like Ry Cooder's "Paradise and Lunch" album. Perhaps some John Hyatt? (Bring The Family's good)
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

Roots and/or alt country- educate me

Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, Dave Rawlings Machine are all good starts for alt-country. Willard Grant Conspiracy is worth a listen, as is anything Nick Cave and Warren Ellis collaborate on.

Hah! Just turned on BFM in the car and who should be playing? Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello.

Been a looooooooooong time since I heard a blues record that didn't remind of that scene from ghost world.

The new St Vincent is strangely funky, in a warped kind of way.

The new Rival Sons is pretty throwback, but for a rock band they groove magnificently. Obviously listen to a lot of soul and r&b. I think you'd like the sonics too.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for when you mention 'roots.' Whatever the case, Pokey Lafarge is pretty darn cool. Might be a bit clichéd for your tastes, but they're a bunch of really good musicians who seem to love what they're doing. Worth a listen, methinks.

This is probably a good introduction to him and the band.

The more recent stuff tastefully adds a mini horn section.

There are tons of videos on YouTube. I could spend hours linking really good ones. Spend some time checking them out, or get the albums. Well worth it.
