Tbh, Why Can't This Be Love is one of the Van Hagar songs I like.

I was 16 when 5150 came out and I loved it.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Me too. I might be an outlier because I like songs like Right Now too. But I became aware of van halen in the Hagar years so I didn’t have any pre-conceptions.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

Do you think Van Hagar was eclipsed by DLR's Eat 'em and Smile?

That was a guitar-obsessive era for me (now it's just mildly obsessive). About then I discovered SRV and stopped giving a shit about anything with a Floyd. On reflection, I think EVH and SRV actually had more in common than I appreciated at the time (both real 'feel' players and neither were hiding behind shitloads of gain).

It's a good song! But I can't imagine being in a mall and hearing 'Unchained' over the sound system.

It's figurative, as in 1986 NZ didn't have any malls, and I did not have a girlfriend.

Anecdotally... Eat 'em and Smile and 5150 both came out before I was born. Before I got into Van Halen was aware of songs from 5150 but don't think I'd heard of any solo DLR songs until I sought them out.

The DLR album with Jason Becker has some awesome playing!
