Nuno Bettencourt is on an Absolute Tear!
So Extreme are on the comeback and are writing some great old rock n roll and doing it well.
Personally, I've always liked Nuno more than I've liked Extreme. This is a bit of a weird thing to say considering he plays a big part of the music but for me, its always been the way he phrases and solo's, his use of techniques etc etc. The latest offerings don't disappoint.
Awesome to see these guys tearing it up as good as ever and taking it back to early DLR style Van Halen / Crue stye rock n roll.
Amazing to see Nuno coming back with fire. Hi solo game is as good as ever. Creat tone etc... yay.

I'm 100% with you on this. Extreme have always been a weird band for me, there's a tongue in cheek aspect to a lot of their lyrics which I find a bit jarring, and Gary Cherone has a verrry unique voice that sometimes makes it easy to feel like they're slipping into parody. But then you've got Nuno bringing absolutely virtuoso chops, interesting and varied riffs and solos, and funk inspired toolkit. He's just one of my absolute favourite players. The stuff he did with Mourning Widows and on his Schizophonic album really shines for me.

Re: Nuno Bettencourt is on an Absolute Tear!
Nuno's Schizophonic album is massively under appreciated, some great stuff on there.
I have to say I'm not in the same camp, for the new stuff I find Nuno's riffs are all a bit pub rock and his solos lack the incredible sense of melody he has shown in the past. Rise I quite like, but the other two songs are a bit too predictable rock by numbers.
But Nuno will remain one of my favourite guitarists regardless.

The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Pornograffiti has always been an album that I've gone back to over the years - such a ripper album. The guitar work is amazing, as others have said the melody of his playing through the verses, fantastic. But yeah, these singles do seem to lack the same level that the first few albums, maybe he's keeping it a little more "simpler"???
Interesting comments about Gary Cherones voice, I actually quite liked the stuff he did with Van Halen (don't ban me!!), even caught the show they played in Wellington. Was excellent!
Would be great to see them touring this part of the world. Can but hope!

Same here re VH, I was front row and even stalked them at the hotel. I actually preferred Gary with VH to his Extreme stuff, largely because I felt like with VH he had to play it straighter, a bit more contained perhaps. I reckon his voice also suits the ballad stuff in Extreme, but I find every other track I think "that's a bit cheesy". Funnily enough, I never had this reaction when I was younger. Maybe I just overthink things now.Lostininverness wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 1:54 pm Pornograffiti has always been an album that I've gone back to over the years - such a ripper album. Re: Nuno Bettencourt is on an Absolute Tear!
I'm definitely a Nuno fan and think it's awesome to see him completely and unironically go full shred.
Funny though- their last album had some great songs but lacklustre (by his standards) playing. This time the songs (at least judging by these 3) seem to be good/ok but the playing is awesome (the solos at least, in the past his rhythm playing has been just as interesting and inventive but seems much more straightforward here)

If I close my eyes during that solo in Rebel you could convince me that it was Satriani in parts. I wouldn't have said that about any other Nuno solo I'd heard prior to this.

Was a big fan of extreme back in the day, the first 3 albums, it had that geek appeal musically, and Nuno is a beast!

Well he is a shortarse like me. Maybe he also has small hands. That would be a disaster, there goes another excuse for my shoddy playing!

Always loved his sig range but they were just too small for me. Had an N2 and was so stoked but it was so small

Gotta say... Gary is singing over golden era VH/Crue type riffs and sounding good. The amount I've flak I've read about him over the VHIII fiasco, fans seemed to blame him for that train wreck.

Just embrace the easier playability and toughen up!
