NSPD: Master of the Range

Post by Darth Sabbathi »

Oh. Yes. A new pedal day for Darth is, well, not really newsworthy. But this is a bit special, for it is in fact - New Silverpistol Day! 8)

"Ophidia (also known as Pan-Serpentes[2]) is a group of squamate reptiles including modern snakes and all reptiles more closely related to snakes than to other living groups of lizards."

Well, this is cooler than a box of fucking snakes, that's for sure:

Ye olde treble booster at heart, but with some epic mod cons: range and gain controls, plus an on/off switch. Filled with extra special secret sauce:

Tony, you are truly an electrical alchemist of the highest order. I would say though, you need to start signing and numbering your work. How else shall we early adopters reap the rewards when you become the darling of the Gear Page? Maybe add a personal message - something like this:

Excuse my ignorance. What is the purpose of the on/off switch when there is the on/off button?

It is battery powered only (germanium likes it that way... though we could probably have a debate on that one.) The switch allows it to be turned fully off without unplugging the input cable so I can leave it on my pedal board without draining the battery. All Ge devices should have this feature IMO...

Tony's pedals are awesome! I have a "Rogue" on my pedalboard, it's like a Klon on crack! Several OD/Gain pedals have been put out to pasture thanks to that one pedal.

The pills that I've been taking confuse me...

I have a silicon version of this and it's my favourite boost/bump/od pedal. Truly excellent.

Toany actually is a bit of a genius. The Damn and Blast i have is awesome, and the boost part (which I'm guessing is the Blast) is now a key component of a some crushingly heavy tones I'm generating these days.

Plus they look cool as fuck!

Some power supplies like the Voodoo PP2+ have voltage sag controls, so you can drop the voltage down to between 4.5V and 9V, effectively emulating the rundown of a battery and getting that germanium sputter.

Awww you guize! Warm fuzzies!

I'm learning more and more about Rangemasters, but mainly the good ones fight me every step of the way when I'm building them, and this one fought harder than any other I've encountered. Sounds phenomenal.

You can add this at the pedal end without too much trouble too.

Yeah, and I have one of those. But I don't know, I quite like using batteries. It is possibly some kind of misplaced luddite/snobbery thing. It is a bit of a thing amongst fuzzheads, that batteries 'just sound better' - it is seen as an integral part of the circuit. From Analogman: "It's not just the voltage that makes batteries and power supplies sound different. It's the resistance, inductance, and capacitance in the battery, which is part of the circuit in a fuzzface." But to be honest, I haven't done any serious A/B testing or anything, so can't claim that I can tell the difference... :|

Anyway, it provides me with a fascinating side-hobby: hunting for really cheap carbon/zinc batteries! Makes trips to the Warehouse that little bit more bearable...

I can vouch for the awesomeness of those crushingly heavy tones. Mighty and with much girth!

I know we're encroaching to Eric Johnson levels of wankery here I can vouch that batteries do sound better in certain circuits, generally the fewer parts, the greater difference. Fuzz Faces, and Rangemasters do sound different. Hotcakes surprisingly sound better on batteries too.
