The Baritone Build with McLoughlin guitars

Post by djentleman »

Hello,

Hopefully this is an ok place to put this.

Currently Frank McLoughlin at McLoughlin Guitars is building me a baritone, so I thought I'd show some progress of this unique wee beasty and the componentry we're going to be using.

Here's the table of parts thus far. Frank has been shaping the tele body for me. At present it is going to superficially face on, look like a tele, but we'll be cutting away the better part of the back for better fret access (as it's going to be 24 fret).

Neck scaling will be 27.5 or 28.5 inch. Maple unfinished neck (my favourite :) ) and an ebony fingerboard

Because I am a huge Musicman fan, i wanted to use the best bits from the two I own. The neck will be a five bolt mount (again for upper fret access) and will have a similar profile that splits the difference of my Axis Super Sport and my Petrucci. Im also using the Schaller MD-6 Machine heads as I have found them to be the best locking tuners in the market (personal opinion of course). Frank had to buy two sets just so we could have the 4-2 configuration as they aren't reversable. He's going to use the opposite set on a Corvette style neck he's currently making.

Rocking a two way truss rod. Frank has to shorten this (as it's a bass unit) and rethread it. He's a clever chap. It will be adjustable from the neck joint, like a music man

We've gone with a Hipshot bridge, with string thru body.

The pickups are both handwired by Frank. Im going with an overwound, very hot Humbucket in the bridge, and a medium output P-90 in the neck.

As a nice touch, Frank got me in some Ebony control knobs, to go with the neck :)

At present, that's where we're up to. We're going to do a fitting, so that I get the control knobs exactly where I want them to be, as well as work on the sculpting of the body, so that it fits me as comfortably as possible.

I urge you to check out his Facebook page, as there are plenty of photos of the other weapons he's been making for the last wee while.
