What does it for you?
Personally, I like when the performers give me the impression they mean it.
Here's some food for thought.

Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict

Re: What Makes a Good Song
Agree, been discussing this a lot lately.
Having recently watched the beatles docos, all of them, they actually lessened my opinion of them because on one hand, they give the impression that they’re awesome and can just bang out song after song. But on the other hand, most of the songs mean absolutely nothing, and they’re just stringing words together to get a song to work, no meaning or feeling behind them at all!
Then watch the Bon Jovi doco, they didn’t really struggle at all, lots of their success just seemed to fall in their lap, but they’ve got some well crafted songs, and he definitely sounds like he means what he’s singing, certainly worked hard at his craft, just hasn’t been plagued by tragedy or drugs etc…
Watched the Janice Joplin doco, she did it hard, but she most definitely believed in what she was doing, and sang her guts out!
I recently started singing lessons, new nothing about singing, techniques, lingo, just nothing, and it’s actually a really interesting journey, but part of it is how to project the feeling and energy into what your singing, it’s whack man, and fascinating!
So to make a long story even longer, to me, I good song has simple lyrics, a hook in the chorus at least, some passionate vocals and tuneful riffs, be it guitars, piano, whatever!
Guitar solos are cool, but only if they suit the song and add to it, not just blast out some shreddy bollucks just because they can…

Re: What Makes a Good Song
Just today, looking at The reason by Hoobastank, not my usual genre, but it’s got everything you need for a hugely popular song.
Or in other words, a very commercially viable song.
Some peeps would call them sellouts, I’d say to them get fucked, everyone who puts a song in the public arena wants it to be liked, some get liked more than others, doesn’t make them sellouts or any less as musicians.
It’s actually really fucken hard to write a pop song, if it wasn’t, we’d all be doing it and making lots of money…

If you're enjoying what you're doing and making tons of cash as well then isn't that the dream? one does wonder though that fame does seem to bring a lot of negatives for many artists so be careful what you wish for!NZTone.e wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 10:38 pm Just today, looking at The reason by Hoobastank, not my usual genre, but it’s got everything you need for a hugely popular song.
