I've been chasing this guitar around a few owners. Once very nice guy and one shady. Last night I caught-up with it again and bought it.
It'll never be a collector piece. It's a '72 neck (albeit with a 71 serial number on the neck plate according to the Fender decoder thing), and a 73 body (or did he say 74? Can't remember). It's light for a CBS at no more than 8lbs (I'm guessing - that's around what it feels). Pickguard is a Bare Knuckle drop-in with Irish Tour pickups. No sign of the original. Case was non-original too, and no case candy.
All that said, it's a lovely guitar. Really happy with it. Neck feels lovely and I just love the look of it.

It was not uncommon for parts used in Fenderβs assembly line to bear serial numbers from different years. So it could even be all original if they are close.

I'll be honest. It sounds a bit shit. We'll, maybe. Bit kind of harsh sounding and a bit dark. I've a set of Josefina CS pickups I can try. The BK drop-in has 300k pots. Would that matter? No worries. I'll just refresh it all and get some clarity and sweetness back.
An early guitar influence of mine was a teacher who played a Strat like this into a JC120 and a single distortion pedal (maybe Boss HM2) - I thought it was amazing.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.
