Good and not so good, is I think the general opinion, mate. Its ALWAYS a case of try one and see if you like it. Don't worry if its a 'name' brand or not - its all about personal fit.

Personally I think Corts are fantastic value for money, I've had two and while they have both been sold, one was because I don't like Floyd Rose trems and the other is because I have switched to bass.
You basically get an Ibanez for a lot less money. And you yourself admit you're no Satch, which is even more of a reason to get a Cort - it will last you from beginner to gigger, mine did.
Quality wise, they're not quite Ibanez, but oh so close. Better than any other Jap/Korean/Malaysian/Singaporean type Ibanez copies, and they have good standard gear - the EVL series is seriously mean, and if you've had an ESP in the past, you will probably go for them.

Re: help on a new gat please please
I've played a couple of Corts that were good guitars for the money.
As well as being a brand, Cort is a factory that produces a lot of instruments for other brands. I'm pretty sure they make certain models from the ibanez range.

My daughter has a $300 Cort.
It has a really nice neck. Very nice to play. You should play a few.

Probably don't want a Floyd Rose as well....I've found that floyds dramatically decrease my rate of improvement as the tension of strings and attention to detail (muting, vibrato etc) arent there for me..
However $800 can get you some pretty decent of Tardme

Re: help on a new gat please please
first of all, what are you looking for in an electric guitar?
-what sorta sounds/tone are you expecting? pickup configs would play a part in this.
short scale or long scale neck?
heavy vs light?
new vs used?
i've not tried a cort electric, but the acoustics are great!
might want to look at SX too, they make great strat copies for under $400 new. Saw a 57 copy the other day at MW. very nice looking guitar
played nicely too

Hmmm...Theres allways Washburn, some of their cheap gutiars are good quality.
The X-12 is perhaps the nicest guitar I own, I bought it for around $400 or $500.
Whatever you do, don't get an Ibanez GIO, horrible gutiar.

Mine was pretty average, til the trem on it started playing up, it wouldn't stay in tune for more than like 5 seconds
