 that was me! haha, I recently recall asking CD for a replacment block.

Does this also mean that my callahan bridge pup steel thingy will give me 10%-20% of placebo as opposed to bass response? bugger, its where my pups fall down apparently sounding a little weak in the bridge. :(

Would be interested in your opinion on that.
I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, it was purely hypothetical :)

It seems that most of us are after the classic strat sound. Graphite wasn't part of the equation that achieved that, and coupled with that, IMO using graphite probably has greater affect on the sound than any result of substituting block material, it would likely swamp the change in sound of the block (if any). But bear in mind the effects are small in the first place. Graphite is great for mechanical reasons of friction mitigation etc but likely has opposite effect on tone to the goal one is after. That's about the only point I was attempting to make.

Remember Leo Fender was a firstly a business man. Most materials, including woods, were chosen as much, if not more so, for supply and cost reasons as for any tonal goals. hell, the Telecaster was primarily conceived as a mass production, cost effective instrument.

wtf, what about the saddles, can i hear past them?
If sustain is really the ticket for you, maybe get Ash to make it a hardtail for you? just putting it out there...eliminates the problem with the trem angle at the same time :D

I have graphite on my MIM, the minimise string breakage was a good thing for me and the sustain thing sounded promising but I didnt do an A/B so cant really comment except that I'm happy with the sound as it stands.

Haha, I didn't broadcast it here until now :) I was just filtering through all possible improvments at the time.

Have you heard much about the callahan baseplates for the bridge pups? (sorry for the OT) I have heard good things and grabbed one.

Base plates do have an affect. Good engineering reasons behind that, they provide low reluctance path for magnetic flux and alter the magnetic field focus.

Engineers make cost vs function vs benefit decisions all the time. You won't find titanium rods in a hydro dams reinforced concrete. If two twists of the trem block claw screws or addition of an extra spring has effect orders of magnitude greater than substituting Stainless for zinc why not keep the extra $$ in your own wallet.
