On a slightly tangential note, It depends on whether the aforesaid guitars are to be purchased new or second hand.
I would argue that people generally hang on to a truly great guitar, unless there are truly extenuating circumstances.

If you can find an epiphone from the 90's for 500 then you'll probably do well.
If you are looking at spending 1500 on a new custom or similar, just buy a nice Gibson lp studio on trademe for the same money.

hey pick it up and come round, we can do a shoot out? Annaxxx is just down the road from me, you can test it out through a couple of greenstones and the bogner? see if it can kill the gibson or the ash, I'm home all day? We have plenty of scotch, single malt on hand to mop up your tears?

I owned a Epiphone Les Paul Special II (as cheap as it gets) a few years ago and currently own a Epiphone SG G-400 which I would say would be in the middle of the price range of Epiphones.
The Les Paul Special II was, well not the best. Neck shape was very unusual, the tuning keys sucked and the overall build quality, fret work and setup was inferior to other alternative brands such as Vintage and Tokai.
The SG G-400 on the other hand feels more legit if you know what I mean. The overall build quality is good and it was set up great out of the box. Tuning stability is a lot better due to a better nut and Grover Tuners. The biggest let down for me was the pickups (the neck pickup in particular). I'm a huge fan of neck pickups and the stock epiphone neck pup was very muddy and dull. The bridge pickup is okay (I haven't changed it out yet). Again it is still lifeless, it doesn't growl or bite like a bridge pickup should.

So overall I think that the mid range Epiphones are decent, their build quality seems to be on par or better than Squiers in the same price range (I know you can't compare apples and oranges :silent: ) It's a great blank canvas for modding, you are getting decent woods, fretwork and build quality.

I'm up there training so will be in CBD all day, Annaxxx is dropping it into me at about 4pm before I fly back. I'm hoping to get to the next gearfest and it will be good to try hear some decent axes and someone that can play them, I'm still very much a beginner after all. Maybe when I have learnt to play I'll see the value in some instruments that I don't see now. I have to admit my '91 Les Paul did seem to have something that I have missed since selling it.

Now off to the airport for a long and boring day (thankfully my last in this training series) learning about Kaizen. I bet it goes twice as slow now that I'm waiting to pick up a guitar too.

The epiphone casinos are great. Fat tone and feedback. My one is from the nineties. These are guitars that stand up on their own, rather than copies of a more expensive deal.
