floyd saddle replcement question

Post by Funch »

i just got my ST3 set up and the bottom E and G intonation is set so far back that the back of the saddle is hitting the base plate and i cant use the fine tuner

Image
on my esp there is a wee bevel in the underside of the back of the saddle so it cant hit the base plate where the plate bends up
on the st3 its a straight right angle
thus it hits the base plate and cant be tuned with the fine tuner
my question is can i go far wrong if i get these or do floyd saddles come in different sizes

oh, its a licenced Floyd, not an Original Floyd if that makes any difference

what string gauge and tuning are you using?
I'd guess extreme fret wear, incorrect bridge placement or a bad set up are the cause...don't treat the symptom find the cause :o

iv got 9 to 42 on it and tuned to E
it was set up with bigger strings on it, not sure what gadge but
the intonation perfect even with the lighter strings on it
the frets are worn but there is no dead notes
the set up feels good, it plays really well
and im guessing if it was the set up the intonation would be out something fierce

The bridge saddles of the E and G strings cannot be moved back far enough to intonate (this is just one part of the job of setting up the guitar) so the guitar definitely has a problem or problems with the way it is set up. Don't go buying the more curved bridge saddles in an effort to remedy the intonation problem. There will be a better way to intonate the guitar (regardless of string gauge and tuning). The guitar is not set up right. Check the neck relief and adjust the truss rod, and check the alignment of the strings with the fretboard, look for any slight sideways twisting of the neck. Check the height of the nut. There will be a way to fix (set up) the guitar that does not require buying those more curved bridge saddles.

The replacement original Floyd Rose saddles are different shape and height compared with the saddles on your BC Rich Floyd. I have both of these types of bridges.

I think those licenced Floyd Rose saddles ( on Ebay ) are the same dimensions as the Original Floyd Rose saddles. So they will have the same width but be lower and shorter in length than the saddles on your BC Rich Floyd Rose. But you might have a better chance of being able to use the fine tuner screws. Those replacement licenced Floyd Rose saddles should also match the 14 inch radius of your USA BC Rich neck. If you buy new saddles then hopefully the fine tuner screws will be long enough to reach the long bolts that screw into the back of each saddle. The fine tuner screws on your BC Rich Floyd Rose push down on the long bolts at an angle ( just like the Gotoh Floyd Rose bridges ) but on the original and licenced Floyd Rose bridges the fine tuner screws push straight down ( 90 degree angle ) on the bolts. I read your question wrong and thought you could not intonate the guitar.

I hope it's not with the same guy....He really should of told you the worn frets (and subsequent string length shortening..) caused the saddles to be so far back the fine tuners no longer function :?

Dumb guy question: is that the right angle for the bridge to rest? If it sat lower at the rear it would increase the string length and you could move the saddle forward why not?

Im guessing it would put all the other strings out, not to mention what that would do to the action lol
