Home contents, Guitar cover
Hi guys, it's that time of year where our contents insurance is up for renewal.
I wanted to ask who you guys would recommend for also covering guitars under the policy?
I'm aware that I'll have to have a couple under additional single items.
Any other advice would be great.
Thanks
Dan

Make them single items - give them a list, make the value explicit.
If you gig with them, you're on your own when playing out.
That's all we can do in this country...no specialist cover available. I've looked at everything.

We're with AMI for just about everything. It seems to have a high enough cover per item to not need the guitars to be specified (I think jewelry does though). It also covers the guitars outside the home provided you're not using them at the time for work / payment.

that's right, I thought that if you gig with your Samik it makes it an item of business or whatever, thus needing different insurance.
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

Re: Home contents, Guitar cover
Interested in this thread. I've always wondered about second hand instruments. If you have a bank statement showing what you paid, would insurance reimburse that amount? Or would there be arguments over its value? What about if you traded gear with someone? I guess you'd have to get the item valued.
Do they consider guitars to be a depreciating item? I know they do this for computers and electronics, wonder if that includes digital effects modellers.
Edit: I will actually call them up to be sure, but these are some ideas worth thinking about for the rest of us I think.

Re: Home contents, Guitar cover
I had a guitar stolen from my car in Christchurch a few years ago. They paid out at new replacement cost. The guy I dealt with at AMI did ask a few sneaky questions about why the guitar was with me at the time. He was angling to know if I was using it for performance (I wasn't) so as to give them an out. I think I had it with me because I'd arranged to test an amp and wanted to use my own guitar.

In my case, my 1960 ES335 is valued at vintage guitar replacement value...not a new one!

It took me a long time but I finally found someone who did it while I'm out playing! Not exactly cheap but well worth it my position I'd say!GrantB wrote:Make them single items - give them a list, make the value explicit.

Re: Home contents, Guitar cover
On mine I only have to list them separately if they're over a certain value, $2000 I think. A penchant for Korean-made guitars means I don't have to list any though.sirvill wrote:I've asked them a number of times... apparently mine don't have to be listed separately, they fall under general contents.
I did once discuss my Greenstone, but the fact it is a one-off and would never be made again, even if it did go missing or get damaged beyond repair, kind of made it impossible to value.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

It's often worth your while to get an insurance broker, they deal with all the shit, and it costs you nothing and they get you a sharp deal, job done!
