There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

I'm sure you are right about Gibson and marketing, or any of the big name makers. $5k for a bit of ash bolted to a bit of maple???

But, ply is often preferred for jazz boxes and some semis, for the back and sides at least, it can give a darker tone, which is desirable. It is acceptable to have a carved top though :-)
Ply does not mean it has to be cheap wood, or that it has poor sound qualities, but (usually maple) ply is the tonewood of choice for some guitars. Just sayin'
