Guitar finish

Post by Rog »

I've said before that I am not a fan of woodgrain guitars - gimme the paint can! However, it is obviously a matter of choice. Here's one the owner finds beautiful and yet to me it looks like its made from a packing case:

That was all the rage back then...just like they went yuck to Surf Green in the late sizties - now try and get one. I think that's an Ibanez (or a Yammy) - they were great gats for their time - still now too. Yeah, too bad it's Placemakers ply top...well, that's what it looks like...

I do like some wood grains but it looks like they found that wood on a building site.

I love woodgrain finishes, as long as it is a very nice piece of good looking wood like straight- and tight-grained mahogany or rosewood, or flamed (and some quilted) maple.

That is just ugly.

I hate to say it, but "the Nips just aint gots no style!"
Not long after this model, Ibanez started listening to the Yanks and really upped their game in the styling department. Sadly Yamaha still haven't caught on. At least they know how to deal with the guts of a guitar...

Think you're all forgetting it has probably darkened quite a bit over time - thye used to be a nice honey colour and the only problem with them (Yamaha 2000, Ibanez or similar of that style) used to be the high prices - when the Yamaha SG lot first came out the reaction was 'Oh classy - but you can get Gibson for that amount'.

On the plus side, like the old Ibanez's, they'd take anything from a flying bottle to dousing in hot chunder night after night without any effect due to the super glossy polyeurethane like finish and still sound - well sort of reasonable.

That packing case look is very much a part of Japanese architichture and furniture historically. A function of the wood they have had to work with I guess. Funny thing is that over there packing cases are made of Meranti, which looks more like the back of a Gibson LP!!!!

Yeah but so would your beloved strat if I stripped off the finish then chemically trated it so the boundaries of the different layers oxidised heavily, covered it in varnish then exposed it to our UV for a while - bit like the effect of burning it lightly - and that is what happens over time with the wood resins plus the gunk the Nips put on these things. It's not overall it darkens but at the tissue layers.
