I don't know about these, I'd love to try one but they just don't look right.

Oh, but you should hear one with nasty distortion and tuned down a whole tone or two

If you're going to tune it down, you might as well get a 6 string bass and tune it up :p

Or just fit a set of BB Kings on your axe and have the gain without the pain

Down tuning it would just make it sound like sludge wouldn't it.

Not really.
Baritones are made to 'conduct' a lower sound anyway, right?

I'm assuming that it runs on the same sort of relationship that a violin has with a Viola?

Yeah, what ZW said.
The longer scale allows you to tune to B-B or D-D with fatter strings without the strings flopping around like a mad woman's tits.

Musicworks Greenlane has a Yamaha RGX long scale gat and another Musicworks shop has a Mike Mushok signature baritone which is really nice. Very interesting to play, and much nicer than a 7 string.

Wonder if the baritones will go the way of the long neck 5 string banjo - popular with a few (including yours truly) for the lower tones (suit the voice better) but ultimately too unweildy to be widely taken up - now I'm older my shoulder aches from more than about an hour of playing it standing up and on a strap.

Do the baritones balance well?? or are they awkward from the longer neck?

I reckon one might suit me cause of my height. I'm 6'6" so my long arms might make it easyer to master.

Depends on the design. You wouldn't notice much on the Yamaha or the MMM1.
The LP wouldn't be that flash because the upper strap button is not extended on a horn and the neck sticks out further.
My Diablo has the extended top horn, but the neck still sticks out by an extra 2 frets.

For balance, ideally whole neck-PU-bridge assembly should be placed farther into the body (like a bass) to re-establish a conventional balance point, but that messes with your hand position over the bridge/strings and top fret access. An extra long top horn can be used, but then it looks like a short bass rather than a long guitar.
