NGD: Something kooky (from Walsh guitars)

Post by bender »

After a sphincter tightening trip via USPS (tracking didn’t update for 23 days at one point, then it turned up in Hawaii), this beauty finally arrived on Thursday.

It’s made by Walsh Guitars in Washington, and absolutely kicks arse. Light relic job is really nice in the flesh.

Crazy figured neck:

Lovely tort everywhere- pickguard, bridge pickup, binding, and even the cavity covers:

The neck is huuuuge, the pickups are a vintage Japanese pickup (rewound by Gemini pickups) in the neck position, and a Gemini Suprocaster in the bridge. That’s his take on a string through pickup (think Ry Cooder) without the string through bit. The trem is by Goldo, who make all the Duesenberg hardware, and is lovely and smooth. The trem arm is a bit too short for my liking, so I’m going to figure out either a replacement arm, or a longer tip- maybe like a Maestro handle.

The guitar is super resonant- you can feel the notes really strongly vibrating through the neck.

Here are some better photos from the builder’s instagram that show off the contours, the binding and the headstock

The bridge pickup is outstanding- it’s like the best bits of a Tele bridge and a p-90, with a dash of something else. And the middle position is Twang city.

Yeah, it was 100% worth the wait. I’ve been admiring his builds for a while and stumbled across one in Guitar Gallery in Auckland- loved the feel but didn’t love the look of that particular one, so I contacted him to see if he had any stock on hand and this is what happened!

The trem is a Goldo DG Shorty:

Thanks chaps. This guy is my favourite builder at the moment, edging out Bilt and Frank Brothers. His designs play off vintage Japanese and Soviet guitars, and he frequently uses upcycled pickups.

They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.
