Re: Real or fake? 73 Telecaster
Congratulations, that's a great buy (probably ) Love the finish and the patina. I think the tuners currently on it are a big improvement over the ones Fender were using in the 70s. Another vote from me for getting a rewind on the pickup if it is dead. Certainly don't throw it away. Brass nut looks like it was filed out for fat jazz strings--which would make sense given what you say about the owner (except of course you don't want a brass nut for jazz!). Enjoybender wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 1:51 pmI don't know if it would be worth sourcing original tuners (they'll probably be horrifically expensive). See how those ones work- if they're fine you could just stick with them. If it were mine, the wonky one would bug the shit out of me, and I would probably get some of these repro tuners.Reg18 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 1:07 pm Would it be worth sourcing some original tuners? I suspect the holes might have been enlarged to fit the replacements though. might try and find a white guard though as I prefer the look. First priority is to get the pickups working.
I’m guessing brass nut isn’t original either?

Along with some adapter bushings.

Re: Real or fake? 73 Telecaster
Got some pics of my tear down coming soon.
Bridge pickup is dead, noticed the tiny copper wire going to one the wires was not attached, attempted to get an ohm reading off it anyway without any luck. Could be repairable but might leave it to the experts.
Pots are 1meg dimarzios, so these have been changed for sure.
Neck date is 72.
Pickguard is some sort of metal.
Everything else looks in order.
Standby for some pics.

Re: Real or fake? 73 Telecaster
If the tiny copper wire broke after the solderen joint, it will have lacquer on it so can't read the coil's resistance. Simple fix and most likely the pickup will be fine...
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

I've successfully repaired a pickup with this issue. I veeeeerrrrrry gently unwound one turn of the disconnected section, stripped the enamel with my thumbnail, and resoldered it into the terminal.

That truss rod access is in better shape than my tele from 10 years later. It hardly looks abused at all.

Apart from their size... could have done the dishes while the browser opened the files...
