NAGD: 1987 Guild GF25 made in USA (now for sale)
Is 1987 vintage? Feels odd to think of it like that…
I don’t play acoustic enough to justify more than one, so after selling my lovely old Martin, I picked this up on a bit of a whim- one of my favourite acoustics is a friend’s 70s guild d-50. I’ve only played it a couple of times but I hear it on his recordings all the time. I was looking for a good strummer with a spruce top, and a manageable size. This popped up on trademe for a good price so I thought I’d give it a shot.
I wasn’t crazy about the reddy orange colour, but it’s kinda growing on me The tort guard is lovely It’s hard to photograph, but it has a pressed arch back like a 335, and no back bracing.

I love the old shop sticker
The back and sides are a lovely looking mahogany.

It’s a smallish sized jumbo - 16” (whatever that means), and really comfy to play.
Initial impressions are that it sounds good, although it’s got some weird low tension strings that sound a bit rubbery for my liking. The neck is really slim- I reckon this is the perfect acoustic for someone who has mostly played electric- the neck reminds me of a strat neck. That is the only thing I’m not crazy about- just because I’ve always preferred chonky necks.

That colour is fantastic! Congrats Ben.

Love the colour too
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Yeah, I’ve come around to the colour. It reminds me of my dad’s old Yamaha classical guitar- and that’s a warm fuzzy association.
Oh, it also has a surprisingly excellent sounding passive pickup in it too.
It’s had a really good setup done recently- the action is staggeringly low. I’m going to put some heavier strings on it soon- hopefully that will help me come to terms with the slim neck.

Well, it’s a lovely guitar, but not quite what I was hoping for. The risk of buying something without trying it first!
If anyone is interested, it’s available- I’ll list it properly after Christmas. Asking price will be around the $1250 mark. Test drives in Auckland are welcome.
