NGD: Gibson CS R6 Goldtop heavy aged

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Well here we are again.

A gold top was my initial Gibson desire and a few have passed by over the last year or so but Rob had encouraged me to wait for an R variety, quite wisely.

There was some skullduggery afoot with this purchase. I won't go into details but the upshot is tho I lost the TM auction I was able still to purchase the guitar at a price much lower than the final bid. Lets say the buyer reneged....

So with out further ado...

So whats my take on the R6?

1. Elephant in the room - the relic work. Now im not a relic guitar guy nor have I owned on up till now. But I have to say I think its great. The neck in particular just feels like an old worn in neck and doesnt have that stup looking poo smudge fender puts on necks. The guitar itslef feels great in the arm. CS has done a wonderful job on it I think.

2. Neck. Its beefy. But not ridiculous. CS has been attentive with the frets and fret ends. The fretboard is a lovely dark rose wood. I changed the (I presume 10s) strings for 11-49 and it plays low fast and true.

3. The guitar feels weighty. Ive not weighed it but yep shes a big girl. With this comes some pleasing resonance.

4. The p90s wont blow your head off, which is what I like. Through Robs (not dimed) Marshall we got some wonderful tones. The most enjoyable sound for me was through my 6g6b bassman clone. With a goodly amout of attenuation and some atmospheric reverb the smooth just broken up sound of the mid and neck position was just so musical. Sounded just lovely with the organ behind it (JB) .

Now im absolutely NOT a les paul expert. Infact, other than my Jnr this is the only les paul ive owned. But I think its a good one :)

Well done - I'm glad that it worked out for you! It looks great :-)

I had a few auctions on my watchlist that the same bidder was bidding on - I wonder what their game was.

Rob, in totality I think you’ve played it more than I have (plugged in any way)

You’re a bit more of a Gibson / Les Paul buff than I

What’s your take on the neck, description wise ?

How did you find the pickups ?

Congrats! Had been watching that one for a while. The one thing I like with relics is the non-need to be precious with them, probably not going to be an “oh shit” moment when it gets its first knock or ding

Oh and thanks for the reminder I need to get a Goldtop back in my stable. Enjoy :)
