NGD: DC Pro

Post by The Scarecrow »

So, I'm finding myself liking the LP tone a bit more with time but I've never loved the ergonomics of a single cut (Tele's aside); all my guitars have usually been in the SG/PRS double-cut style. Wanted to try something a bit different for me, and spotted one of these on TM over the weekend at a good price.

Interestingly, it's got quite a bright tone overall, was expecting it to be a bit darker, especially on the neck pickup. So in reality, it's not too dissimilar to my current guitar, but a bit thicker in the low end, so less of a harsh transition for me sound-wise. It's got tonal options for Africa with all the splitting/phase options, and the split coil cleans are particularly pleasant. Nice low and mid gain tones which I'd expect from the Epi Probuckers, which are pretty good alrounders; doesn't quite have the tightness for metal chugs like ceramics, but for what I'm playing these days (current band sounds like a combo of Jimmy Eat World and Paramore) some gain adjustments and harder noise gating has solved this.

Aesthetically, it's a real looker in the Mojave Fade, which IMO is the nicest colourway offered and it's the first Epiphone I haven't hated the headstock on (I'm not goin to go all singlecoil on it though  ). Even the LP pickup-selector positioning, which is normally been my biggest hate about the design due to my tendency to strum towards the neck and constantly knock has been minimised by the body curves make it lower in profile to the point where I haven't yet found it as an issue. Plus, it's surprisingly light too and sits nicely slung mid-low which isn't normally for me, but seems to work nicely.

Not sure if it'll replace my long-standing and much loved old Ibanez AXS32 (because the flat as radius on that thing is a joy to play) but it's certainly got a lot going for it.

I think they dropped about 5-6 years ago, but are maybe discontinued now?

Yeah I'm kinda surprised it went for what I'd consider a steal.

And yes, it's got that Homme vibe for sure.

I reckon that always depends on the seller, and what they're prepared to accept to move something on. Plenty of good guitars without a big name on the headstock that don't stir up a lot of demand, means you can still get a bargain.

I think my surprise comes from what I'd consider a low reserve and and a (seemingly) conservative bid appetite threshold from other punters. Not the first time I've been surprised by current market prices though.

It should play really nice with those ergonomics huh. You can get that on lots of guitars, but I think a big part of the Gibson sound and playing feel is the 24.75" scale length.

That's why I like the SG. Easier to play. The Les Paul has a great tone though. But I try stuff on the SG that I would never attempt on a Les Paul.

P.S. What's that now, the third NGD post of the day? An Explorer, a DC, and a Tele. It must be the miserable winter weather. Cheering ourselves up by buying guitars to raise the dopamine levels. :P

Agree. It's been interesting coming back to that after about a decade of playing 25.5" or longer scale lengths for extended/lowered tuning ranges. But you're right about the feel of it for sure.
