Masters of Jazz

Post by Jops »

Spring's coming, time to try something new.

Thinking about deep diving on Jazzmasters. I know nothing. Educate me.

I always prefer modern appointments to vintage correct except when it comes to pup configs so don't tell me about some hb equipped pos you tried once.

Anyone tried that JV Hybrid II in K Rd? I'm thinking the 250ks in it might be better to my ear than 1megs.

I suggest saying "offset" three times in a mirror until Strummers appears.

I tried a Hybrid II at Guitar Gallery. Very smooth. Not much like a Jazzmaster.

You rrrrrang....

I did a recent run down on JM stuff on this page of offset chat:
https://www.nzguitars.com/forum/viewtop ... &start=435

I tend to agree with Mr Bungle, its 'in for a penny in for a pound' (jeremy) with jazzmasters. Start messing too much with the formulae and you no longer have a jazzmaster. Neck radius is a personal thing. I prefer vintage with JMs. But then im not Mr Bendy Bend-rite

I dooooo hear you re: 1 meg pots. These will suit SOME jm pickups / amp /reverb configurations. I solder a 1 meg resistor across the volume pot outer lugs in my AVRI JM. I also have different pickups to stock as I want this to be a versatile JM. (telecaster brass plate style bridge JM pickup and a slightly over wound neck).

The 1 meg across the volume makes ot closer to a 500k, but not exactly equivelent. Somehow it still retains a bit more JM. Cant remember the electrical explanation, Bender told me once.

I played a few off the shelf new american JMs when I was in melbourne recently. They were all awful.
If you can live with thick poly and a thin neck then you might consider MIJ and do a full electronics/spring/trem plate/bridge up grade.
Ideally you'd will find an older AVRI or similar. But in NZ thats easier said than done. There are models that have a 9.5" radius.

Smooth all over: smooth tone, smooth neck, smooth satin finish.

Thanks @strummers! Good tips.

Guitars are ugly. I'm just looking for new sounds.

We have a lovely Squier Classic Vibes in Oly White/Laurel in store at the moment if you wanted to dip your toes in. Looks like this one:
(Apologies for Rhett Shill content)

Edit: accidentally put rosewood instead of laurel
