Hey everyone sweet I finally found a NZ forum. I live in Wanganui and Im moving to palmy next year for uni. I wanna get into guitaring and make a band with my mates.

So yeah basically im just being a pain in the ass and askin if you guys can point me in the right direction. I want to end up playing stuff like Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Slipknot, Dream Theater(lol that will be ages away) etc. I have been doing alot of research latly and I know I need a guitar with good pickups, like humbuckers and not to get a Gibson cos thats more of a jazz guitar. I wanna get an Ibanez or something similar I have been looking heaps on trademe but I just dont know an actual good guitar from a crapper.

I have about $1200 to spend, maybe more if i really need to so can you guys give me a hand with finding a good one? thanks heaps

Slash plays a jazz guitar.

Dude the best option is to go to a few music stores and play some guitars. find one you like the feel and the sound of and go from there. You would be surprised how easily a guitar can change its genre depending on who's playing it.

back in the 70`s when i was taking lots of coke at the loft in Ny i played a dean dimbag, great for be-bop leads and fusion but not so goode for dixieland. i did like the RR soloist for dixie but the guys in the band wernt into anything called a jackson

something to bear in mind.. does your $1200 include an amp? won't be leaving yourself much headroom for both guitar and amp no?
I only ask cos you mentioned "want to get into guitaring" which may suggest you're not playing already?

The Dean dimebag has been around for yonks, way before Dimebag used them. He won one in a guitar competition when he was like 14 or something? and yes Dean have been around that long, they just went out of business for a while which is why Dimebag played Washburn for a period of time.

They obvoiusly weren't dimebag guitars then, i don't know what the old name was.

"ML". is the word you're looking for.

And yes, I am reasonably well versed in Dime's guitar gear and endorsement history.

If youre just starting out, you don't need to spend much. Jeez, $1200? Thats over twice what i spent on my first guitar and amp.

Just get a low-end superstrat (dont worry too much about brand as long as the brand is somewaht recognisable since they all come out of the same korean factories) and a budget practice amp.

Ibanez, Jackson, Washburn, ESP/LTD etc. will all have cheap options that will be fine for a beginning metal player.

Personally, i'd take along somebody with some guitar experience, and pick out a cheap but playable guitar from the shop, pair it with a Marshall MG15, a Roland Cube or a Peavey Rage amp (listed in order of my personal preference, but buy the one that sounds best to you), and if you have budget left over, try to squeeze in a multi-fx pedal with a tuner and drum machine built in e.g. Digitech RP50/Zoom G1/Zoom 505.

The pedal will give you an acceptable metal tone, and the metronome/drum machine is great for practice, especially fast stuff like metal.

Don't be afraid to buy the amp and pedal second hand, but i think, if you have no real guitar-fu at this point, buying the guitar new is the way to go if you dont have friends who can sort you out.

bro dime and me were like jamming with Vai and then after a bottle of jack we went and got matching tatoos, like via man dont believe what people say about him he is an anamal man over the top, he punched out tommy lee at the spandex bar at 5am, tommy was so pleased he was on his knees crying. mick mars and his wife drove us all home in the back seat of his farrari and tommy and steve went out looking to score

Sweet that Dime Stealth V Pro looks pretty mean. Yeah I wanna spend about 1200. I was gonna get a car but I dont really need one and they dont really interest me so I thought I would spend what I have on something I actually like. As I said its gonna be for uni, like practice every day for an hour or so after, probably more. So I want it to last, and I dont wanna buy a crapper then spend the next 3 years wishing I had got a good one ya know?

And no it doesnt include an amp. My friend is giving us an amp for free, it will probably be a bad one but if i really do need to sort out a better amp I can do it later, I just wanna get a good guitar and start practising as soon as possible.

So that V Pro, would that be good for a beginner? I mean yeah it looks awesome but will it play alright?

+1 it's fine for a beginner, It's a Washburn dime, probably plays VERY well
