I have a RE 501 and played in a band with it and another (excellent) guitarist who had a SRE 555 (the rack mountable version) and can confirm that when used in wide stereo spread, to their combined full powers, audience levitation and earth axis, spin pattern distortions are possible.

I haven’t really had a chance to get a full grip of all the functions
I’ll do a few more recordings this week with some different guitars / amps too I think

Hey Anthony,
Your unit appears to be a very early 201. I can see this was originally fitted with a brushed motor, and probably modded by Roland to fit the brushless DC motor.
Have you owned a 201 before? If not, they generally need a buffer between the guitar and echo to get a decent sound. It could be that contributing to the tone suck.
I would recommend at least the full service kit. Using the correct tape is very important in these machines, and I can only guarantee the tape we sell is the correct type. It's possible you will require the ultimate service kit and a recap to get the unit functioning optimally again, but you might need a tech to take a look at it to determine the full scope of what it needs.
Very cool find having such an early unit!

RobRoyMcCoy did a demo for NZG members a long, long time ago, when he owned Freedom Cables. Well I don’t know the exact workings of it but it’s an input impedance matching thing as to e space echo was for keyboards or similar and not guitars, but the length of cable does something to accomodate for this, and this I haven’t tested it, this results in less treble cut. At least that’s what the Gretsch article infers. Different to the long cable into guitar amp (which is impedance matched for a guitar).
