Vintage Celestion in a valve radio
Dated 1954, my son opened this thing up & I couldn't help but notice the Celestion speaker.
2024; I have explored the extent of the perimeter dome, there is no escape. I am become Morpheus

Cool! Anyone know why speakers were designed elliptical early on?

Because the world was flat back then?GrantB wrote:Cool! Anyone know why speakers were designed elliptical early on?
Cars often have 6x9s in the parcel tray; maybe it was just to make it fit the space?
Nothing to see here.

Re: Vintage Celestion in a valve radio
I’ve got a Celestion 8” speaker lying around somewhere out of a Vintage radio. Mine is round though, be interesting to know if it sounded much different doing a modern 12” speaker the same shape as that one.

I've got a 12" 74 1772 alnico that I picked up from a bloke in Taupo 18 months ago, came out of a '50s Pye Radiogram, it's brilliant in my Princeton Reverb.
Celestions are made to last, can't speak more highly of the brand.

Back in the mid 60's in the UK, Goodmans speakers were considered the best followed by Fane with Celestion very much in 3rd place on the pecking order. To quote the spray tan presidential ( larf ) oracle "Not a lot of people know that "

That surprises me as most of the amp makers at the time(in the UK) used Celestion with not really a mention of the other two.
What products were Fane and Goodmans used in?

Re: Vintage Celestion in a valve radio
Probably most notable was the original Vox AC30s were fitted with Goodmans 12" Audiom 60 alnico but changed to Celestions fairly quickly.goldtop0 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 08, 2020 10:55 amDharmajester wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 6:22 pm Back in the mid 60's in the UK, Goodmans speakers were considered the best followed by Fane with Celestion very much in 3rd place on the pecking order. I have a stash of Goodmans Audioms that I've run for years in my DC Cabs 2 x 12. Love them but they are darker sounding than a Celestial Blue.

As a matter of Vox AC30 taste, what say you, greenbacks or alnico?
