absolutely ... there's no messy PCB etching, or vero soldering (just point to point) and no worrying about biasing FETs or messing with ESD sensitive chips.. this is totally a great place to start... :D

Where would I start?? Anyone know of a good tutorial for a pedal like that? And where do you but the parts? DSE??

for the pedal above, you would need:
1X housing ~$10 - 15 @jaycar
2X stompswitches ~$15 ea @Custom Audio Boutique or jaycar
3X audio jacks ~$3 ea @Custom Audio Boutique or jaycar
2X LEDs ~$2 ea @jaycar
LED clips 1 bag few bucks @jaycar
1X2.1mm DC jack ~$3 @DSE
wire - free if you know someone throwing away an old CRT computer screen or TV or anything electronic really
paint - to your liking
