BAJA preamp pedals

Post by Reg18 »

Steve Bartlet from Baja Electronics has been working on these preamp pedals. Based on the actual amps using jfets instead of tubes and no doubt some other modifications to make them work in pedal format.
I don’t think his intention was to go direct using IRs for a digital amp-less rig at all but they work super well at that.
They sound and feel pretty authentic to me, I used my HX Stomp as the IR loader and went direct into camera so no post processing what so ever.
Excuse the sloppy playing, in between kids birthdays etc I had approx an hour to put this together so no time for multiple takes.
He can’t be bothered with marketing or even advertising these days but he does have approx 10 pcbs of each preamp in stock so said he would take orders if people wanted them.

If you just want a simple authentic preamp of your favourite amp and don’t want menus or complex then this is a pretty cool option. It can be used as a normal drive pedal also, there’s a power amp out or guitar out.

Yeah he’s labeled them as they are mostly (assuming he’s not planning on advertising them as he might have a cease and desist letter otherwise)
AC30, JCM900SLX, JCM800 2203, Bognor Ecstasy, Diesel VH4, Soldano, amongst others. I’ll do another demo of the high gain stuff at some point too, although it’s not my speciality.

Looking good. I'm a sucker for any type of Marshall-In-A-Box style pedal, especially anything based on the Super Lead.

I just got this email from Steve.
Hi Reg
I forgot to mention - there is a DSL100 and Dual Rectifier high gain
channel pedal as well but i can't get them back from the guys who have
them at the moment - the DSL squeals in the nicest possible way with a
strat.
News flash: I am currently awaiting pcb's from China for DSL100, Dual
Rectifier, JCM800 2203, and Uberschall.
These pedals will use a 6N17B (pencil tube with similar
characteristics to 12AX7) running at 260 - 380 v DC - just like in the
real amplifier - in place of the Jfet circuit - hopefully will get
even closer to the sound and FEEL of the amplifier they represent.
Comparing the simulated frequency response and phase characteristics
of these shows virtually no difference between the all tube and pedal
formats at each successive gain stage ! All these and the jfet pedals
should take treble boosters and tube screamers, rats etc., with ease
because the op amps are running on 30v supply rail for maximum
headroom.
Will keep you posted when I have built them - hmmm - may have to buy
some more enclosures ;-)
cheers
Steve

I might wait until he gets the Rectifier one back
And do a high gain demo of a few. I’m
No shredder so I’m not sure on exactly what to play for the higher gain demos.
