I saw this schematic at sopht, and though 'that looks like fun!' Simple design. Only, well, i'd like a bit more filthyness from her, usual story



Any ideas on how to get a wee bit more gain out of this thing? Larger plate resistors on the preamps? Extra gain stage? Further more, what would each of you change about this amp?

Oh just take out all the resistors=more power to tubes! YEAH!

That's a very strange design. I'd rewire all the triodes to be in series rather than parallel. You effectively have 2 gain stages in this design, rather than 4. V1 is biased very strangely. (like a single triode).

Yes, the parallel configuration will give more voltage gain per stage and more driving current but this is unneccessary except possibly to drive the KT88. As the Haunted said you would get more pre-amp distortion if you wired the triodes as a cascade. You could do V1 first and leave the second twin triode as is it. Or you could get maximum gain by cascading all four (with appropriate padding) but you would need to measure output power before and after to make sure you can drive the KT88 sufficiently. Depending on the supply voltage you could work out the required driving voltage.
