Soldano SLO
Spent a bit of time playing on the SLO pedal. Cool. But it has got me gasin for the real thing. Well something close. Found the schematic and parts list for the SLO 50/100 clone. Anyone built one here? Or heard one? Seen a couple on youtube they sound good.
I have heard talk here of a guru tranny winder in NZ. Any contact info ? Huge waiting list ? Super expensive? What is the good oil on getting something custom built? Spose I should start with them first.
Thanks, Tim.

Re: Soldano SLO
I believe that the magic of the SLO has a LOT to do with the OT design.
I used to own a Hot Rod 100+ after I bought into the literature that it had the same OD circuit as a SLO (which it does). The only real difference between the two amps is the OT.
Well, the Hot Rod 100+ was a fine amp indeed - but tonewise, it was a distant cousin to the SLO (I've played a couple and they are drop-dead astounding tone machines).
This leads me to surmise that the OT must play a huge part in the tone/feel of this amp. I believe that simply cloning the circuit will not get you there - you would also need to replicate the OT specs.

These are the guys who apparently do dead-on replicas of the DeYoung transformers the SLO uses.
Here's some more info:

Re: Soldano SLO
There are actually a few diferences in the preamp, FX loop, and less filtering in the power supply. Also the component choice is on the cheaper side. - these could be what you are hearing. There shouldn't be a huge difference between good quality transformers, unless the specs are wildly different (which they don't seem to be). It's usually an icing on the cake kind of thing. As always YMMVNZRS_Matt wrote: This leads me to surmise that the OT must play a huge part in the tone/feel of this amp. Those Onetics ones are insanely expensive.
Here's my one... Might be up for sale soon.

The SLO clone forum:
http://www.yesterdaysrevolt.com/sloclon ... 8b13e755ea
Basil is a true expert winder - not many of them left in NZ. His trannies are usually largish (lots of iron) and so the OTs carry bass frequencies well. This might not be exactly what you want in a SLO clone (but his OTs do sound fantastic nevertheless). Check out the SLO clone forum for what the regular SLO fans use. I'd probably go for an SLO spec OT from somewhere in the states if you want authentic sound, but get the PT from Basil, because he winds PTs (that last and last) for NZ conditions. Simcha is not winding at the moment I believe, but may again someday hopefully.
A lot of the SLO trademark sound comes from the pre-amp configuration as well - a very hi-gain pre-amp with lots of frequency padding and inter-stage attenuation. 2CW
