Leather ….

Post by Sheriffdohboy »

Cut to the chase….anybody ever used or heard of using genuine leather as a substitute for tolex???
Just got rid of an old leather lounge suite as the frame was fudged but decided to strip off a fair hunk of the leather which was in ok condition.
Considering using some to cover an amp headshell.
Is that just a dumbass idea or could it work?? Chur

That would be an interesting project. Be interesting to see what some of the others who have done tolex work think.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

Mesa Boogie use leather on their custom finishes, right? But I think it'd be a lot thicker and sturdier.

Never tried leather but I finished a head in denim. Worked a treat.

My Greenstone of Doom is covered in leather. Looks awesome, but is a lot more susceptible to damage than tolex, one of my old cats thought it would make a great scratch post, I suspect it wouldn't have shown up anywhere near as much on tolex (if at all).
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Is that just a dumbass idea or could it work?? Chur
What is on the underside? Leather can be a challenge to glue to wood - absorbent...and the joined edges aren't as clean looking, as it's thicker.

The way my cab and head have been covered is quite different to how tolex is normally edged and cornered in. It has worked well and hasn't lifted or shrunk anywhere, but it isn't something I'd have done if I was gigging regularly, it's showing wear from only a few gearfests and the like.
