6g14A Showman Build

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

When I got into surf guitar, almost a decade ago (yikes) I think the first tune we learnt as a band was miserlou....and the search for the perfect surf sound began. A mjor break through was building my own 6g15 reverb tank.
Since then a lot of amps have come and gone. Even a blackface showman and a blackface bandmaster. But the amp that has shone over all others for me has been the brownface 'blonde' bassman 6g6-b that Ryan built.

Ive had for a long time a hankering for a big iron balls out 85w 4x6l6 clean beast but with that brownface tone stack. The early iteration of of the showman is what dick dale used to make miserlou tones. And thats what I intend to build :)

Today I ordered a chassis, face plates and filter cap housing from ebay. Ive also started to make a list of components and done some basic pricing.

At the moment im thinking brown tolex but I might yet be swayed to blonde....

Here is the chassis, unprinted face plates and cap enclosure.
Ill have to come up with a printing plan for the face plate. I might end up ordering something but im tempted to try a decal.

Its going to be pretty much stock, except I may wire a mid control into the back plate.
Also the original PT seems to be a brownface vibrolux or bassman equivelent, that may be beefed up a little. Im probably going to have to reach out to the resident amp gurus for some guidance on that one.

The only thing I can suggest is only use one colour of wire to make debugging it easier, if its always the black wire that causes the problem it should be easier to find.

I’m not expecting this to be cheap. It’s not being done as a money saving operation.
The fact is a 6g14a is pretty much not going to turn up
Here and they are pricey in the states plus shipping , risk and transformer fuckery then all the trappings of a 60yr old amp.

I’m happy to spend the money to have an enjoyable project for winter and hopefully get a battle ready amp at the other end. I really enjoy the brain work of it all tied up with a bit of fender history and geeking out. If you added up the hours it would be horrendous.

Funny that. Where I saw winter project, my thoughts drifted to what I'd most likely occupy it with.

So these are the transformer codes associated with showman amps 6g14/6g14A

67233
125P7A
125P7B

They appear to be for brownface bassman, bandmaster concert and the 6g14 amps.

BUT i see people have used hammond 290FEX in 6g14A builds.

Any amp heads able to comment on the relevant differences and how this all might contribute (or otherwise) to toan ?
