Great stuff man. I didn't see the other entries but I can't imagine any of the others would have come close. The voting numbers seem to back this up.
Edit: Had a look at the others. Some great stuff in there. Nothing that compares to the planocaster though.

Re: Another tele contest build
The most amazing thing is your breadth of talent and imagination. Your pictures, humour, presentation and concept are all in a different league to the other competitors, not just the final product. Last year's concept was also pretty special.
I'm going to have a crack next year and see if we can get the overall and the fastest prize down to NZ
Maybe the beginner one too if a keen novice is up to the task.

Re: Another tele contest build
Haha, yeah the fastest was an interesting component. From what I can work out, he's the only one that thought to take a week off work! A week's still not a lot of time for a build, and to his credit he did a great job, but it was a week of uninterrupted building. I'm surprised no one else thought of it though!
Re: Another tele contest build
Thanks for the really nice comments everyone!
My brother, to whom I'm giving the guitar for last Christmas tomorrow, has a bit of a self serving plan. He's a PR man, he's going to get me press coverage. He maintains the value of the guitar soon to be in his possession will increase if I'm famous ("not that I'll ever sell it or anything"). Good grief! He actually had a serious debate with himself over the pros and cons of going with John Campbell or Mark Sainsbury. Heaven help me. He's not kidding, BTW, he does this sort of thing everyday.
So, I may soon be coming to a screen near you. Yikes.

Whats the situation with the beginner class? I'd be keen to give that one a crack.ash wrote:The most amazing thing is your breadth of talent and imagination. Never done anything more than assemble a partscaster before. I think that rules you out from what I've seen!kdawg2a wrote: Whats the situation with the beginner class? I'd be keen to give that one a crack.

The kauri Coden was 26 hours. Under the terms of the contest I reckon I can halve that.BG wrote:I thought Ash did one in 24 hours a couple of years ago though? or was it 48?

Re: Another tele contest build
Wow, you'd blow the competition out of the water with a build of that speed. The guitar has to have a finish, though, would that still come in in 26 hours or less? An oil finish would do it, I guess. Regardless, if you just finished construction in 26 hours you'd still be a week in front of the other guy, in this year's comp at least.
One thing you could be sure of though, it would be the first and last time they'd let a pro into that category
There's some hefty discussion going on over there about rule changes, including whether to charge entry, or have a beginner/intermediate/pro type deal. Not letting the winners compete in the following year has also been mentioned as a possibility. The mods there have had a hard time keeping track of the number of builds and policing the rules as a result, so there is a move to be able to limit numbers. One good suggestion also has the build threads kept as build thread and have a separate discussion thread for each build. That would give the mods a better chance of keeping an eye on things.
For that matter, the dude that owns the site is kind of famous for doing whatever the hell he wants, and is just as likely to ignore the discussion and come up with alternative solutions. One thing he has confirmed is that he'll be making pickup winding a requirement next year. I reckon that will limit the numbers just fine. It's all pretty interesting though, some good debate going on.

Re: Another tele contest build
The rules state you've got to have never built a guitar. You can have made a body blank, but if you started to cut it or shape it, as far as the rules go, you are an experienced builder and not eligible. There's a degree of honesty involved, of course. To give you an idea, the first place getter in the beginner class was an experienced cabinetmaker, although had never built an instrument. Second was a guy who build his out of yardsticks, and he'd never built anything out of wood before. He'd studied the 2011 challenge builds a month before this year's started. I was pretty impressed by that, and his guitar looked pretty cool.kdawg2a wrote:

There were eligibility enquiries before the comp got underway where people asked things like "I've bandsawed out a body but I've never gone any further with it?". This was ruled ineligible.

Re: Another tele contest build
Yes, it would have a simple finish. It's all about planning and good decisions. While I can build a guitar in a day, I can also take two years to build one. It all comes down to the choices made and how they have to be executed. I have a friend who regularly builds guitars in a weekend. He's not a pro and just uses very basic tools. Good planning.kwerk wrote:Wow, you'd blow the competition out of the water with a build of that speed. The guitar has to have a finish, though, would that still come in in 26 hours or less? It will be interesting to see what they come up with next time.

Awesome stuff man, well deserved win
Keep up the good work and next year link us when you start the build thread so I don't spend an hour at work reading from start to end
