6 coil pickups - home made

Post by Jay »

So I finally finished the neck prototype of my 6 coil pickup. Same humbucking wiring and same neodymium magnets. Bloody loud the neck pickup is. Wired them out of phase by accident so will have to wait for some toan samples. (And I would need some third party fingers anyway for that).

Also made the templates for the covers. Thinking of doing them in see through perspex to provide an unusual element.

Yeah, sorry, the bridge one I designed my own PCB but the etching was shit as I could not get the right pen for the tracks. And i forgot how I did it when I was 15 (many millenium ago...). Something with bright light etc...

pretty cool having six individual coils...
Would you believe it if I said that this was patented by Ray Butts? Yes, the one of Filtertron fame!!!!

Hadn't realised it was song by "Rythm Stick" man. Quite catchy.

Transparent pickup covers it has to be then.

Thanks, I find it so much easier fretting a newly build neck vs refretting an existing guitar.

Here a photo of the underbelly. You can see why I prefer a printed circuit board...

Had a chance to try these pickups tonight. Have to say the neck is a helluva lot of fun to play. A grungy, dirty, hot neck pup. But retaining definate single coil qualities. Enjoyed them so much I left my Gretsch behind when I left!

Great, unique looking pups! Would the staggered pole arrangement make it a little difficult to balance individual string output and tone? Or is the effect negligible?
Too many guitars, not enough talent.

It sounded great indeed. Not bad for a home made one. Just been playing that Gretsch of yours for the last hour. So much want, so little GAS money left.

Thanks for your compliment. I am going to put the neck one in a perspex see thru standard humbucker size enclosure. The bridge in a P90 style housing. The magnets will be glued in on top all at the same level. Doesn't seem to be a problem from what I have heard so far. The purists may want adjustable pole heights, but if Fender can do without that, so can I.

I don't notice any tonal difference as a result of the coils being in slightly different off set positions from the bridge (or nut). I get the feeling that each coil brings out more of the character of each string as there appears to be less 'interference' from other strings. It certainly seems to have a special character. Anyway, Just my few cents from someone who has only built three pickups to date.
