Nah it's not flat... I wanted a carved top of sorts but I was limited by the thickness of the timber I had.Bg wrote:That is hot, but the front is messing with my brain... Its not flat, I'd love to see the profile to make sure its how I see it!

Re: My first build.
Did you stain the maple darker? It kinda looks like flamed walnut, which ain't no bad thing.

Re: My first build.
Yeah, I ended up staining it darker. Something I learnt is that the more you sand and work on maple, the less the grain wants to pop. Wetting it helps to raise the grain, but even after doing that, I couldn't get the same results that I was originally getting without going darker. I prefer the way it looked in the pic at the top of the thread when I was experimenting, but I just couldn't seem to replicate that later on.robthemac wrote:Did you stain the maple darker? that looks awesome, great job! What woods have you used? Doing a set neck isn't the easiest thing to start on so well done.

Thanks! The darker wood is walnut and the flamey stuff is maple.Lostininverness wrote:that looks awesome, great job! What woods have you used? Doing a set neck isn't the easiest thing to start on so well done.

Re: My first build.
There's a guy on TradeMe who sells veneers. I bought some off him and happened to ask whether he knew a good supplier of some thicker chunks of maple. He happened to have some for a reasonable price so a bought a few metres. Actually, he's got some for sale now https://www.trademe.co.nz/building-reno ... 960d6c-001Bg wrote:Where are you getting your wood from, thats got some awesome figuring!
The walnut was just a random guy selling some leftovers from a house renovation.
