Rimu for Electric Guitar?

Post by murky »

Anyone have experience with Rimu as a material for electric guitar?

20 years ago we demo'd a fire-escape on our house (which was almost 100 years old). Licked the lead based paint off to reveal what looks like some nice heart rimu.

I started making an elec gat out of it, but it never got completed.

Considering whether I should bother picking the project up again and finishing it - the big question being am I wasting my time with this wood or not....?

TIA!

I'm sure it will still be cool. I've heard that most NZ timber is more suitable for furniture than guitars, however Ash did make that cool spider Diablo out of rimu I think.

I wanted to say that the wood makes zero difference, and then pop in an eating popcorn gif/emoji thing. But I couldn't figure that out so f*** it...

Weight will be your biggest problem with rimu heartwood... and as tonewood for electric guitars doesn't exist, you are all good to go.

Made a tele out of rimu a couple years ago. Sounds like a tele but it is heavier than a heavy thing.
Loving it so far

Mal from Weta told me that Rimu is not a great sounding wood, But it looks wicked - so I used it for a top on this guitar

I like the look of the Malburian ones. There's a nice Rimu one in there. Prices are pretty reasonable for local handbuilt. Good luck to him.

Looks cool... the neck that is.

Is that fence post paint? If the body is rimu too, get rid of that paint and let the rimu shine :D

What is going on with the yellow on one side of the headstock? Looks nicely aged but the rest f the binding is too white.
