DIY guitar stand ideas

Post by bender »

This is a bit of a longer term project, but has anyone built a decent multi-guitar stand? I need one for my new place (whenever the fuck it’s finally ready) but can’t find anything that fits the bill without paying through the nose and importing. DIY is probably my best bet.

What I need is:
- Nitro safe padding
- Relatively upright - most of the ones I’ve seen have the guitars leaning on too much of an angle, so the stand ends up having to sit quite far out from the wall.
- space underneath so I can vacuum up the infinite cat fur that accumulates in my home.

Anyone with any ideas on those issues?

I actually have some, but my new room won't have any clear wall space for that

Make a freestanding frame for them to go on?

A length of Standard slatwall, like they use in a lot of retail shops should work. Mount high enough to vacuum under, and use 90deg guitar hangers.

Bit like this:

I know Bunnings do a garage storage system that works on a similar principle, but it’s not jumping out at me online.

Bg made a good one. It was just a plank with angled slots cut out for each guitar to hang from. I think the guitars went in at about 45 degrees.

My hangers have the normal foam padding which is apparently safe, I wrap a piece of cotton cloth over those I'm using for nitro necks just to be safe.

Not rubber, essentially. Regular foam is all good, as per most cheap stands.

yeah, I have a couple of them held up with angle brackets. Nothing fancy like padding, and the headstocks have marked the walls - I'll revise the idea for the mk2 versions in about 10 years....
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

The foam on the Rockstand I currently have definitely reacts with my 335's finish.

I have something similar -not wood, and i really dislike how easy it is to knock one guitar against another when you're putting them in. If i made something where the guitars go in that way i'd rather have spacers so that can't happen.

depending on the width of the part that holds the guitar neck, the guitars can pivot. I don't have any really expensive/pretty guitars but if i did i definitely wouldn't use that stand.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

I think some of the Hercules stands had issues with their foam too. It's been sorted now but you end up with older stock you might run into issues.
