Lockdown EVH project

Post by Optical »

I quite like EVHs 78 frakenstrat, so decided to make one for a lockdown project.

The body is a rough-as-guts trademe no-name special (since this might turn out to be junk), the rest of the parts are pretty good:

10-16" compound radius neck with the large headstock https://www.soundguitarworks.com/guitar ... ck504.html
Hipshot locking tuners
EVH wolfgang pickup
Ebay single humbucker pickguard

I bought an uncut brass nut, but that turned out to be a massive pain to shape. So that'll be a job for another day/never.

The body has been hacked out for some reason. I cleaned it up a little with the router so it was less of an eyesore. It's basswood which I have nothing against, nice and light which suits my back. The neck pocket needed a tickle to fit the neck in too.

Sanded the finish back as much as I could be bothered

Coat of primer

Shaping the headstock with a router, file and sandpaper

Quick mock up

Couple coats of black

Tape job - random electrical tape and 3mm pinstripe tape from trademe

Coat of white over the tape

Tape reveal!

Dropped the saddles into some pool chlorine to grubby them up a bit.

And finished..
After a bit of setup time and settling in it has turned out really nice. Sounds the part and the neck plays really great.

Awesome! I have a body sitting waiting to do the same thing. Need to get around to finding a neck. How's the Wolfgang pickup?

Sweet! It's a fun build, lots of suspense as you pull the tape off. Dont do what i did and tear the tape up quick - it ripped the paint edges in some places instead of leaving a clean line. Also try keep your white coat as thin as possible to avoid too much noticeable texture.

The pickup is cool - it gives me an early VH vibe in the tone (although who knows, I might be imagining it).
Fairly bright and gritty, medium output - sounds fantastic through a Jose amp

I turned an old Vester into the red iteration of the Frankenstrat a long time ago. Not super accurate but it was fun. Can only find this photo now

I wonder where EVH's guitar is now. Reckon it'd go for record money at auction.

I wonder what wheeled rig they hauled those speaker cabs and the arty repurposed rack housing with.

It was still hanging up in the 5150 studio in Wolfgang's latest music video.

I found out it has an A2 magnet, I wonder if it's due to that...
