There was (is?) a member here that did this as part of his YouTube stuff on guitar making. He was incredibly talented. I recall there was a one-piece Les Paul at one point.
If anybody remembers who I'm on about and has a link to his YouTube channel, I'd love to watch some of it again.

Sounds like you're talking about Elams, aka Geoff. He's an old mate of mine. He made me these out of puriri, not just wood stuck on plastic bobbins but the bobbins are single pieces of timber machined into a sort of H shape. Super good pickups.
