Big trouble with little e sting tuning (Kluson tuners)

Having some issues getting my high e string (.009) to stay tight on my tele build with the vintage Kluson style slotted tuning heads.

At first I thought they were coming loose from the tuning post, so I tried wrapping it once around one half of the slotted part for extra strength.

String broke. Second time it's happened.

Although this time, it appears the sting has pulled right through the body, coming clean off the ball end (it just fell out the guitar). So that would indicate a faulty string?? Or am I doing something wrong?

Anyone had similar issues?

D'ya know what, I just checked the pack I took the other e sting from, and yes. Yes it was

So to answer the question from that thread, yes they are indeed fake!

Although, the other string I was having issues with (which I ended up putting on my strat with locking tuners) was from another pack (not from aliexpress) and this one seemed to keep slipping off the tuning head. I figure I cut it too short before inserting the end, so I left a bit more length third time round (and then the ball issue occurs with the dodgy string).

So you can see why I'm confused.

Is there a sharp edge somewhere along the string's path, around the bridge or saddle? That could lead to both tuning issues.and it snapping at the ball end.

Probably worth checking. The break angle of the nut can play a part here yes?

But I'm thinking the cheapo chinese strings were the issue two out of the three times. The other was not enough windings around the pole.

If it happens again, I'll switch to 10s!

The break angle of the nut is kinda the go-to for tuning stability. But wouldn't cause a string to snap down the bridge end.
