Is it worth getting the Ultra?

oh and yeah id say so.. on one of those layers patches the chain was this :

phaser, octaver, synth, OD, amp (vox ac30/ model), into 2 mesa cabs (one with a 57, the other with a r121) into a stereo enhancer, reverb, and delay.

so that was using upto 70-75% of the processor. the ultra has more processing power to buying a standard is almost like buying a lower speed computer. also it doesnt have some of the effects.

the main patch though was just a para eq into a diezel into 2 mesa cabs into a para eq.

It sounds pretty darn close to me - is there a digital piece of equipment that'll get closer? Dunno... I'm also aware that there are plenty of albums out there that have nice amp/cabs recorded that don't sound as good as what you just did there, so yeah... YMMV.
To me it sounds like a very well recorded high-end solid-state amp. Just has that slightly too polished factor to it that makes it sound like a digital re-creation. Sounds awesome though and if those are just BS riffs, you have way too much talent and I demand you share some with me...
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Yeah, I'd be all for the Rockshop selling them. As long as the price was close enough. I'd feel a little safer paying 3k for something and having a warranty in the same country.

DM : yeah i hear what your saying.. i should make a less metally sounding clip for ya.. or you can come over and try it out soon :) i really think this box can come closer to a warmer tone. and actually to tell the truth.. i boosted a fair whack of upper mids both on the axe fx para eq and while mixing. it could definately sound warmer.

ross : the splawn nitro is still with rick. we both agree we like the tone we got from the splawn through the rivera iso box was better than the axe fx.

Phew, haha I was worried you guysgotten rid of it, hehe.

Ultra jealous of the AXE-FX goodness. I must admit I'd love the atomix powered cab/AXE-FX setup. Just watched a Periphery demo clip of the atomic poweramp + AXE FX Ultra (they're using them live now)

I'd be into hearing that. The Axe is taking off with modern metal players and shredder types, but I'm keen to hear what it has to offer for low and medium gain. Also for high gain in a more rodded plexi or 'old amp and a fuzz' kind of vein.

have you had a crack with 11R? -I had play with one and it was really impressive.

Yeah, I've seen those. Sort of a mixed bag really, a few really accurate tones and a lot of stuff that's pretty off and uninspiring. But part of that will be the recording and the player's ear for those tones.

There's obviously a lot of potential in the Axe, and I probably won't get to the bottom of whether it's for me until I get in front of one and spend a chunk of time.

The just on breakup/light crunch sounds are kinda meh. Don't really sound any better than Guitar Rig.

Some of the lead tones and the clean tones sound excellent, though.

I've found Guitar Rig to be a bit shit lately, so thats not an inspiring statement :(
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Yeah, I thought the ACDC plexi/jtm45 tone was pretty decent, though. And there's a youtube clip where a guy gets a pretty cool Jimmy Page type tone. So I reckon there's hope there.

I'm currently using podfarm and I tend to find I like it for low-medium gain but not really for high gain. Though I should get off my arse and order the model packs with the variac'd plexi, JTM45, superbass and XTC. But part of it is also me: I've heard people do great things with podfarm, at least totally good enough for home demoing.

My five minutes with Fler's Axefx was far from ideal testing circumstances (through a PA, other dudes in the room trying to jam, no time to tweak), but my recollection was that the presets I heard were kind of in the vein of that youtube dude's stuff: mostly close but no cigar.

In comparison I sat with my tele and 11R through studio monitors at the RS and I was really impressed with it. The rig actually felt like a tube amp, which the Axe through PA certainly didn't, and I could tweak whatever I didn't like out of any given preset straight away and get a good tone I could use.

There's way too many dudes loving the Axe for it not to be awesome, but as I said they often tend to be modern metal guys, shredders or guys coming from rack/modelling setups. Eventually I'll get in front of one for a proper blat.

well martin, youre more than welcome to come over to mine dude. also we could make some proper semi gained clips perhaps.. with someone who actually has the touch.

when i saw the dudes 4 videos, i thought pretty much 80% of the patches i could easily have dialled in better. with the axe apart from standard tone controls, you can change things like power amp sag, bright cap adjustment, speaker thump etc.. not to mention being able to chuck in a parametric or graphic eq wherever you want. so if the amp sounds remotely like the real deal.. chances are you can get it closer to what youre hearing in your head.

that being said im not 100% if it will do it for everyone.. but it comes alot closer than anything else out there imho.
