Comfort zones .. . . stepping out of, randomly.

Post by otisredding »

OK, I got inspired by Bender's idea of stepping out of our comfort zones - so here's a demo of a tune I'll never be able to perform 'cause it's way too far away from what I normally do..... I entered it in a songwriting comp for a laugh (they made some lyrical direction and everyone had to use the same ideas) . It was loads of fun to record. Kinda going for Bacharach meets Pink Floyd meets Costello.... anyway I was going for pop/rock sturm und dram.
LOL 8)

The middle eight is a scream complete with Winchester Cathedral-type telephone/record vocals.....

I KNOW, i KNOW - don't give up my day job.... heh heh

Is it wrong that I kinda like it?

I love the guitar solo at the end- great tone and nice, understated phrasing. Way cool 8)

I really like the way you get your mixes to sound. The Xmas gift to the forum one in particular had a really great rawness or ugliness to it that really sizzled my bacon. The standout on this track is you voice. Great singing and nicely treated.

I can't say this track will make it onto my ipod though ;)

LOL of course not.... it was just an exercise in writing and producing a certain kind of sound.

I just quickly whack bash mixes through a Fairchild faker with a bit of EQ... I've always really enjoyed home recording since my first 4-track cassette recorder back in the mid-80s. I write and record about 60-70 songs a year on average and they ain't all blues tunes. If I don't do it I go quite mad.

Now I can foist them on unsuspecting forum members and they'll have a life outside my house... warrr warrr whooaarr whooaa hah hah

Not really my cup of tea, but very well done indeed.

This sounds incredibly good. And I think you nailed the three influences squarely on the head. Way cool. In a weird sort of way. It's in my playlist. That last solo is killer, could have been on The Wall.
