Fear of retaliation/taking law into own hands. Particularly if it’s someone know to the victim/accuser. Name suppression may come into play as well.

good point. it's a worry if they don't tell you, and it's actually someone close to you.

You could ask and they'd tell you.

If it gets contested in court and you have to give evidence they'll definitely tell you.

The officer implied who their confidently suspected person was but wouldn't specify at the time because he'd not yet spoken with the individual.

I hope it wraps up well. I hate being involved with anything that might have possible reprisals from criminal types.
