Stolen Gear Found! WARNING

Ok so I can't find the post because for some reason it has gone into oblivion. Anyway, at the end of last year my girlfriend had her car broken into which was full of a good portion of my music equipment. I had lost hope of finding it in till today when I stumbled upon my guitar on trade me ( http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instrume ... 830924.htm). I called the police and they said to contact trade me which I am yet to do. I decided to take another look on trade me and everything under turner's auctions in music and instruments at the moment is my stolen gear apart from the Cornet. Anyway what I wanted to ask is what is the chance I will actually get this stuff back? And I just wanted to give people a warning so they don't bid on stolen property.

You should be able to get it back as long as you have taken down the serial number and that was registered with the cops when you reported it?

Did you report it to the police when it was stolen?

You would also need some sort of evidence that it is actually yours. Photos, receipts, serial numbers, the information that you reported at the time... etc.

It could be a recovered property auction, hope you can get it back!

A timely reminder to take down your serial numbers and take pics of your gear.

Some low life scumbag was casing our joint this morning, the missus found him looking through the bedroom window - talking to his mate on the mobile phone. He claimed to be there to estimate a garage extension - only we don't have a garage, and we have a security gate thats 2 meters tall and our section is fully fenced.

Cops were there within 2 mins, the missus got a good look at him, they think they know the bastard.

WTF. A-holes!

Forgive my ignorace but I thought, if you got paid out insurance on the gear after it was stolen then doesn't the insurance company technically own the gear if recovered?

IME they DGAF.. My stolen guitar was recovered (someone took it to a music shop to be restrung, it was recognized as mine and held). I told the insurance company, they never contacted the shop.
It sat at the music shop for 3 years before they sold it on..

What stands out to me is how quickly the cops write it off and how process-like it is to the insurance company. Even being insured you're still well and truly out of pocket (leaving aside the sentimental value).

well in this case it is probably the insurance company selling it on.....Did the OP say anywhere that he'd been covered/ Reimbursed? wouldnt mind creeping on the mallekko :) only if he's been payed out though....!

That seems rough, is it normal policy that clients aren't even informed let alone given first option when items are recovered?
Maybe not TV's etc but surely its common knowledge musical instruments have sentimental value. What's next..

good point-i think usually they do give you first option. Especially if its something rare/unique-if any of my customs got stolen id rather have them back!
