Much better than it would play in the box, I've always found that way harder to do!
I thought playing in the box would be in your wheelhouse.

But not sure whether it's worth holding out so I can save a bit more a get a higher spec'd model. Thoughts?
Depends what you want. I actually prefer the plainer finish on the 386. But it has Kent Armstrong pickups. Never played them; no idea. The 486 has Seymour Duncan Jazz and 59 and the top model has Duncan Antiquities.

I like the Jazz/59 combo. It's really versatile covering everything from acoustic tones to full on Rock. (Think Zeppelin's 'Ramble On' with its clean verse and raw chorus). I can't think of any reason to change them at the moment.
The impression I get is that all 3 models are essentially the same with different top laminates and pickups.

Thanks - I’m sure you’re right. I played a couple of their LP’s that looked essentially the same but had a $600 or $700 price difference. I was told it was down to the Lollar pickups that was in one of them

Why they named these models after Intel's microprocessors is beyond me
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

I was actually looking into a brand new Epiphone Lucille (definitely not paying Gibson price for plywood guitars lol). But got an used T486 instead for nitro finish and proper pickups.

I got it used so can't comment on the factory setup. Played nice though.

I’m open for a Lucille but it would need to be a Gibson. Have played a couple of Epi’s and TBH they were pretty crap. There was a cherry red Lucille I was contemplating earlier this year but it had had a mod done (master volume from memory) which I was a bit reserved on. My Dad actually convinced me to pass on it because of that

But yeah, if it’s a Lucille that doesn’t have Epiphone on the headstock I’m probably gonna be interested

Damn that gibson plywood, so much more toan than epiphone plywood! USA glue is way better.

Everything else can be switched out I'm sure. Through the ship in a bottle. My 339 Epiphone is great after mods, lots of them, but less than stupid Gibson prices. Though some people want the gibson headstock so much they chop it off..... (that was weird, where is that thread?)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I've never met a Lollar that wasn't worth paying more for.

Got into Music Works in the city earlier in the week, spent some time with 386 and a 486 with Bigsby, can't say I was wowed with either. There seemed to be little resonance - you played a note or a chord and both died off pretty quickly and nothing really rang out. Maybe they're just like any other brand where not every one that comes out of the factory is a winner  Apologies to rain on this thread

The thing I love about this forum is the ability to shit on gear without people taking it too much to heart. It gives me more confidence in people's positive opinions.
