Brownface content.

Post by Reg18 »

A friend who owns a studio in Lyttelton dropped this off for me to try for a few months. Not upset about it tbh!!
I’m no expect on the brown face era stuff but I do know the harmonic trem wasn’t used after this series which is really warm and certainly has a different vibe to the black face trem.
Only had a quick play but as you might expect from a big 15” speaker, big, round but does still have some Fender bark to the midrange. Looking forward to playing it some more and I’ll do a demo if I get time.
For now, photo dump!

I had a Silverface Pro reverb for a while which was nice but sounded pretty different to this. I briefly owned a Paul WD built Pro amp circuit (original 50s version I think) which sounded actually very similar to this. I’d say this has more midrange bark than your typical blackface/silverface. The owner has one of those classic stories from back before TM was a big thing and the local buy sell paper reigned deal king, picked this up with a bunch of other amps from a deceased estate for $900 ish for the whole package. He didn’t even know what a Pro Amp was until he later did some googling.

Ha wow that a coincidence I was just reading the schematics on this very amp over coffee this morning!
What a lovely thing. Let me know how you find the harmonic trem. I’m thinking of building a 6g7a brownface bandmaster but I’m tossing up leaving out the trem.
Enjoy !

That's a rare beastie that one, the 15" speaker model, what a good buddy !!
Most pundits overseas like the brownface era amps over the other pre CBS ones.............so it goes.
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

Had permission to open this up so thought it was a good opportunity to document the amp with some photos.
