vintage 30's vs Greenbacks

i've been told v30s are great for metal
then i read that stone sour use greenbacks so are theese good for metal too?

There's no reason why greenbacks can't be used for metal. Some people mix them with a more aggressive speaker in the same cab. That's what I plan on doing soon. I have 2 greenbacks in my quad and i'm going to put 2 V30's in [Mono X-pattern] The spongeyness and warmth of the greenback will counter the relative 'harshness' and aggressiveness of the V30. Can't wait to try it out.

no problem mixing them in the same cab but what you have to realise is that the vintage 30's will be much louder in the cab. Greenbacks sensitivity is 98db, Vintage 30's is 100db. An increase of only 6db is double the volume. Other factors will help in a closed back cab but there will be a difference of around a third.

Aren't Eminence more expensive in general when compared to Celestion?

Just remember that greenbacks only handel 25 watts each. If you are playing loud metal with too much low end you will need to be careful.

My favourite is actually the G75T, just in a proper cab (not a Marshall one).

You mean G12T-75 ? Those are the two greenbacks i'm currently using. No way in hell i'd ever run my 5150 [120 watts] into 2x 25watt greenbacks. These ones seem to handle the low end just fine.. so far atleast.

Agreed re: marshall cabs. I remember reading an interview with Scott Henderson and he basically 'shed the light' on how to improve them. [Something like rewire with heavier gauge wire, higher quality too. 4x Greenbacks, replace the back panel with decent wood. A few other things]

Its not the wiring in Marshall cabs that I don't like, its that you can use better and heavier wood to make a better cab.

I have this old quad that I put G12T-75's in, it is the exact same dimensions as a Marshall 1960a with the same speakers. Its made from different wood though, and weighs around 10KG more than a Marshall. I have A/B'd it several times to the Marshalls and mine always sounds louder and fuller.

That's pretty cool. My cab is Donghua's old ported 4x12". Basically the same dimensions as an ovesized recto cab [straight] and with a port in the bottom. Sounds excellent even with just two speakers. I doubt it's as good as an actual boogie cab though but i'm not complaining. It's a shame G12t-75's get rubbished as much as they do, when it's actually just the rubbish Marshall Cabs that people use them in that's really to blame...

Its particle board/chipboard (whatever you want to call it), not MDF.
