got the valves off Trademe. Good price and safer to send than from overseas
I didn't think NZ made valves

Harking from the restless city of Christchurch, New Zealand, The Valves are an exciting new band who deliver a high octane rock sound. The band formed about two years ago, and were forged out of the fires of Wildside legends, Pumpkinhead and Slim.

I bet every small town, in small town NZ, has a band called 'The Valves'... good job its not up as a trademark.
Its not enough that we succeed, we still need others to fail
Timoes wrote:Hi, new here also. But to the important stuff. I built a Ceriatone 18 watt TMB. God its great! Built my own cab from MDF board.Fitted a Eminence Red Fang alnico speaker. Just need to finish the covering now if I can stop using it long enough to pull it down.
It will owe me around $850 once totally complete. I talked nicely to the dude at Ceriatone (NiK) who was only too willing to mark the declared price down to under $500 NZD as not to attract the dreaded GST. Ceriatone operate from Singapore so the freight is a little more realistic than from the US which has become nearly ridiculous.
I got the valves off Trademe. Good price and safer to send than from overseas. The Redfang came from the US and fortuneatly when the dollar was buying 80 odd cents USD. Well worth looking offshore for speakers. I saw the Redfang listed here for over $600 ! Any one heard of WGS speakers? Wharehouse guitar speakers. They are getting some great reveiws and are a real good buy. They are seriously good copies of all the big name of speaker manufacturers and US made.
But yep the 18 is sweet !! Think I might build a Train Wreck clone soon. Heard one on youtube the other day. Some dude fired up a LP through a genuine one. Fan bloody tastic. The Gibson/Marshall sound is great but I reckon this Train Wreck/ Gibson is killer. Just need to get that dirty ol Kiwi buck back up a bit.
Cool site BTW.
nik operates from malaysia.... different country =) sorry. just being a lil patriotic. gotta shed some kiwi skin before i head back for a 2 month holiday in november! and yes, ive decided to bring back a ceriatone.. not sure which one yet.... (not llike i have a guitar to play with even!)

I've just checked - they do have the Midnight Blues Band, just like every other small town in NZ.... R

Man, I wish someone in NZ would do 18watt amp kits.
I'm so sick of throwing my money overseas.
I guess I'm starting to get a little patriotic myself, but sod paying some american guy to overcharge me on shipping and parts. If I had the nouse and cash I'd do it myself for others. Shame those two are missing.

Just started to build a jcm 800 2204. Using the layout from dreamtone.
Does anyone know a good place for the caps?
Also looking for tube sockets. Jaycar seems to be the cheapest so far.
BTW this is forum is fantastic
Which caps you after? Ryan @ freedommusic.co.nz (AKA CustomAudioBoutique) has The JJ 50-50 can caps at $22 each. you will prob need 3 for a 50W JCM-800
If your after signal caps, go for the vishay roedersteins at farnell.co.nz. They are very similar to Mallory 150's. they are also used in the hand wired reissue Marshalls.
Tube sockets: Jaycar is OK for sockets, they are the same brand as Metroamp sells from what I could tell. (the Mould is the same, but they were ever so slightly lighter in colour, could be a batch thing?) They are still going strong in one of my amps.
For a few bucks more, you could get ceramic ones from Freedommuisc.co.nz
Thanks for the info.
Have ordered my transformers from basil in howick he seems like a good guy.
Another question...where is a good place to get turrets/turret boards from in nz?
I can supply JJ and Sprague Atom electrolytic/filter caps, Mallory, Sprague Orange Drop, Sprague Atom and Silver Mica coupling/tone/bypass caps, carbon comp resistors, tube sockets and a few other parts you may need. PM with your requirements

Interesting... Let us know how they come out. (pics etc.) would love a local supplier of Iron. What kind of prices are we talking? Is he making the output transformer too?

I have seen some of his work, looks good, they look to be overrated for their wattage though which can be good or bad. More iron / less copper seems to be his approach, not sure if the inductance suffers though, im sure he knows what he is doing. I may order one in the future to try.
i killed one of bassils power trannys, he said he hasnt had one go down before so we split the difference
100 bux for the power tranny
150 for the out put tranny on a marshall 18watt schem
