Amp with great distortion under 1.5k

Post by NZ__Ninja »

wow havn't posted for a while...

anyway, i currently own a fender blues deluxe which is great, has great tone, a fantastic clean, sounds sick with pedals and is amazing for all the low to medium gain stuff i do however im finding more and more its lacking when i want to just let it rip in drop D, even with pedals cranked etc, just lacks the power and tightness im looking for, and because i play with gain on a lot more than i do just clean im kinda seeing it as better to have a better distortion channel and decent clean than an amazing clean that sounds good with pedals. so im thinking about selling my amp and getting a new one, what do you guys think? id almost definately need something 2 channel that can do clean and gain however amazing gain channel is paramount and as long as it has a decent clean id be happy. not fussed about reverb and would prefer it to have treble, mid and bass knobs and an effects loop so i can run my delays after the gain channel. also would be cool to have something that can be boosted well with another drive pedal to make it crank? and i use alot of delay so it needs to work well with delay pedals. oh yeah and has to be under $1500 (will definately buy second hand)

I haven't experienced it first hand yet, but maybe the Blackstar HT Club 40? I know I like the gain channel on the smaller HT-5, and the cleans were nice - this should stay clean louder being 40w, maybe?

That's in your budget and new, so many bargains to be had used I guess.

Sounds like you need a closed back 2x12" combo or cabinet + head to really push some air and get that low end thump. Not sure what you can get for under 1500 used that will fit into that category apart from a peavey 5150 combo secondhand (not recommended, absolute boat anchor and clean channel is non existant).

Amp with great distortion under 1.5k

Post by Danger Mouse »

Something in the Hughes and Kettner range perhaps? If you're not a solid state snob they do some mean high gain amps that come with very reasonable cleans. I have a little 15w SS combo for bedroom jamming and it's really, really nice for what it is.

A Warp 112 could be the go.

What pedals have you tried with your amp man? Because a heavy pedal through the clean channel should sound good. What kind of tones you want? I think in that price range you're going to get a lot of fizzy buzzy tones
