I think the simplest way to describe my understanding of this amp, after glancing through the manual, is:

1) forget about the Hi/Lo Inputs as far as offering an extra gain stage

2) look upon the amp as a single channel, master volume amp

3) look upon the foot-switchable Drive section as an in-built overdrive pedal

According to the manual, while the Lo Input is attenuated by 6dB, Laney view these as hi-gain and lo-gain inputs in the sense that you plug guitars with low gain pickups into the Hi [Gain] Input, and guitars with high-gain pickups into the Lo [Gain] Input. They appear to be thinking high-gain passive ‘buckers vs passive single-coils and low-gain ‘buckers, rather than active vs passive. Same difference at the end of the day though, but their terminology is what might be confusing matters. It’s simply about not driving the preamp too hard.
Thats right, 1964. To use the term 'gain' with regard to a passive difference or with regard to passive pickups is a fundamental perversion of the meaning of the term. Passive pickups do no have 'gain' in any form as they are simply a transducer with no amplifying function. They have a mechanical input and an electrical output.

Words like 'gain' sell amps, words like 'impedance' do not.
